Biography
Some people would love to be a top commercial lawyer dealing with high-profile cases worth millions of pounds.
Others may dream of becoming a successful author of crime thrillers based in a city they know and love.
Gary is an impressive individual – he has achieved both.
In his day job, he is a Partner and Board Member at top Scottish law firm Burness Paull LLP where he leads the restructuring and insolvency team. During his many years advising a wide range of clients, Gary has earned an excellent reputation for his skills and knowledge of the law.
Indeed, the Legal 500 Directory has praised him as “great at identifying the nub of an issue almost immediately, and never flummoxed by a problem”.
Gary’s work on cases involving fraud have also helped him create his popular crime thrillers based in a modern, cosmopolitan Glasgow. Reviews for his books are very positive with one major newspaper describing them as “unputdownable”.
Clearly Gary is a great role model for young people. He proves that with talent, determination and a lot of hard work, it is possible to be successful in two distinct fields at the same time.
In Gary’s own words …
“I decided quite early in my school life that I wanted to be a lawyer. I pursued it with single-minded determination even though my guidance teacher was keen to point out to me how difficult it was to achieve. If you have the ability to do something that often isn’t enough to reach your goal. You have to put in the work.
While being a lawyer was always my ambition, writing was my dream. I have been very fortunate to achieve the two things I set out to do and have derived enormous pleasure from both careers.
Anyone willing to marry hard work with their inherent abilities will be able to succeed.”
